Corfu Weather
Corfu is the most northern of the Greek Islands and also the most popular of the Ionian Islands. The island experiences a thoroughly enjoyable climate which differs from many of its neighbouring islands.
The appearance of the island and its vibrant green landscape which consists of around 3 million olive trees and sits perfectly upon the crystal waters, benefits from the slightly higher amount of rain that falls compared to some of the other nearby islands.
The weather in Corfu has in fact been a little unpredictable in recent years where just a few years back, the area was shattered by heavy rains that caused severe mudslides. However, summers are normally milder in Corfu than the rest of Greece although the area has recently experienced periodic heat waves.
Summers in Corfu tend to consist of an abundance of sun, long days and very little rain, if any at all. Temperatures have been known to creep into the high 40’s but in general summer temperatures peak at around 35ºc in July / August with an average of between 27ºc to 29ºc which although still very hot, is in fact reasonably mild for this area.
July and August can also be particularly windy but this is seen as a blessing as it gives a cooling break from the intense heat.
The month of June experiences an average temperature of 24 degrees and is probably one of the best times to visit if you are planning to relax in the sun and spend your days on the beach.
During winter Corfu is still a splendid island to visit but it does become some what of a ghost town due to the significant drop in temperature and the amount of rain that falls which is an average of 12 days per month during the season. Around 13ºc is the average temperature in December whereas January and February average daily temperatures of around 10ºc.
Humidity during this time rises to around 70% and can make tropical storms quite likely although if they do occur they usually clear fairly quickly.
May brings average temperatures of 19ºc and not so much rain which makes it a popular time for people to visit, especially for avoiding the summer crowds and the summer winds.
Spring is also a wonderful time of the year which brings fresh flowers and greenery. The weather conditions are mild with an average of 12ºc in March and around 15ºc in April.
Autumn can see high temperatures in the 30’s before falling into the mid 20’s come the end of September. The beginning of autumn is still a very enjoyable time to visit the island, as like Spring, the tourists have lessened but the sun is still shining and the tavernas are still open.
Do not forget to bring your sunglasses while in Corfu and especially if you are hiring a car in Corfu as they will be an indispensable item due to the intense brightness of the sunshine.
